Shot glass of the day #9: Georgia

From Alabama we drove into Georgia, where Jesse and I stayed overnight in Atlanta. It was beautiful to see the little of it I did. Waffle House was great there. My friend Pete is from GA, and my buddy Adam and his family live there now. Always liked the Georgia Bulldogs logo. One of my favorite mascots...

Shot glass of the day #8: Alabama

When we left New Orleans, Jesse and I wanted to drive through the South as fast as we could. We sadly never found a shot glass in Mississippi, but got a good one out in Alabama. We drove right through to Georgia, so the only memories I have of Alabama are gas station eating areas and diners...

Shot glass of the day #7: Louisiana

From Texas we headed into Louisiana and stayed in New Orleans right on Bourbon Street. This was a year before Katrina hit, and Jesse and I went on an official bus tour all around the city. We usually don't do stuff like that, but I'm glad we did. Many of the places we saw have since been washed away... and many have been re-built. I remember hearing "Roses" by Outkast and "The Joker" by Steve Miller Band numerous times at numerous bars being covered by numerous bands. This was also the only time I convinced Jesse to try oysters from the shell.

Shot glass of the day #6: Texas

Texas scares me. Conservative cowboys are not my favorite people to hang out with. Despite this stereotype, I have a lot of friends who come from the Lone Star State who don't fit that description at all.

Still... Driving there with California plates makes me very nervous.

When we drove through Texas on our road trip, Jesse drove through the whole way. We got some great BBQ in Fort Worth, and sang karaoke in Austin.

Shot glass of the day #5: Roswell, New Mexico

Crap. I really thought it said "Roswell, New Mexico" on this glass. So much for getting a shot glass where the place it was purchased from is easy to see. All these things are made in China anyway, so it's not like they're "from" the places I got them. Nevertheless, from Arizona, Jesse and I traveled through New Mexico. We got this glass at The Roswell UFO Museum in Roswell. Other memories from New Mexico include a stop at a punk club in Albuquerque where we saw a flyer for a band called "Rage Against Martin Sheen" and a visit one thousand feet below the surface of the Earth at Carlsbad Caverns, one of the greatest natural wonders I've been lucky enough to see so far.

Shot glass of the day #4: Arizona

Another shot glass from Arizona. This time with the state prominently displayed.

When Jesse and I went to Arizona on our big road trip, we stayed with friends in Phoenix and then drove north to Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. We also visited the largest meteor crater in the world in northern Arizona, where they filmed Starman.

My pals Erich Orser and Rebecca Roka currently live in Tucson, and I hope to visit them out there soon. Tucson has a great goth/industrial scene, some nice bars like the Kon Tiki, and 3 decent comic book shops.

Shot glass of the day #3: Arizona

Although this glass doesn't say "Arizona" on it, it was purchased at a big truck stop and souvenir stand in that state just outside the California border on the first day of my road trip across the country with my wife-to-be. This would have been May 15th, 2004. So why buy it? I liked this glass because it was one of those old gag images I had seen before on vintage postcards in my childhood trips to the desert. I had always found those appealing, probably because the art reminded me of comic strips. It was because the state's name wasn't displayed on this glass that inspired me to only look for glasses where you could tell where they were purchased from thereon out.

Shot glass of the day #2: Palm Springs, CA

On our first date, my wife Jesse and I drove up to Palm Springs for Tiki Oasis 2004. This was our first road trip, and a precursor to our month-long trip across the country, which would begin a week later.

I love Palm Springs and have been going there since I was a kid. Back then I didn't like it too much because it was boring, but now it's a great place to visit. You can lay around by a pool in a bathing suit and then take the tram up to a snow-capped mountain within the same hour.

I got my first 2 CD's at the Palm Springs Town Center record store back in 1986. They were "Express" by Love and Rockets and "Closer" by Joy Division.

Shot glass of the day #1: Club 33

Shortly after my wife Jesse and I met in 2004, we went on a month-long trip across the country. In each state we visited, we got a shot glass. It was a little unique souvenir of where we were, even though we're not the type of people to do a shot in every state. In fact, we rarely take shots EVER. Nevertheless, the tradition continued and we got a shot glass in each state/country/city/place of interest we have visited since that had souvenir shot glasses. For the next few weeks I'll be presenting our collection here. We start out with Disney's Club 33 Shot Glass. Not the first glass we got, but definitely a nice one:

Angry Birds 3 Star Sadness

I'm almost done getting 3 stars on every level of Angry Birds! Too bad my Palm Pre I'm playing it on is broken and needs to be replaced. (The bottom part of the phone that contains the keyboard is coming loose from the other side of the phone). This means when I get my new phone that all the games will need to be re-installed and my Angry Birds progression will evaporate in a sea of pixels. That's months of hard work and devotion down the drain! I know in the grand scheme of things that this is meaningless compared to the global catastrophes happening as we speak, but I thought I would record my three stars on (almost) every level before I turn my phone in and they are gone for good...

video

By the way, since I made this video the other day I found ANOTHER golden egg by watching the credits all the way through. Today is my last day with my phone. BOO!

David J show flyer from 2002

This was a flyer I made for a group of shows David J (from Bauhaus and Love and Rockets) did back in 2002. I got to do experimental karaoke for his warm up act on 2 nights as Wrong Dimension Boy and sang the song "Holiday On The Moon" with him dressed like a space alien. I currently run David's website and he has a number of interesting things coming up. Have a look!
